Patient looks forward to 2025 thanks to MWL staff

A Billinge man says he can look forward to 2025 thanks to the “amazing’’ work of staff at Whiston Hospital.

Terry Raven spent 10 days on the Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital earlier this year after being rushed to the hospital and says he cannot thank the staff involved in his care enough for looking after him.

“To put things bluntly, I wouldn’t be here without them,’’ said the 80-year-old.

Taking up his story he said: “I was in a bad way when I was brought into the hospital at the end of September. I had a hernia growing on a hernia, had pneumonia which caused a lack of oxygen, and my lungs were full of bile.

“I had to undergo very specialist surgery and I am so grateful to everyone at the hospital for all they did.

“I spent about 10 days on Intensive Care after that for my recovery and nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and I can’t thank them enough.

“My care was wonderful, and I can definitely say the NHS is not broken. I am now near full fitness, walking three times a week and meeting friends regularly. I am going to enjoy Christmas and that is thanks to those very special people at Whiston.’’

As a way of thanking everyone Terry made a donation to the Trust’s MWL NHS Charity and was only too willing to see his picture take centre stage on the charity’s new advertising boards that have been placed outside a number of our sites.

He said: “It’s lovely to see my photo up[ there with Frank from the ward who I got on really well with. I have joked that everyone I know who sees it had to pay me a royalty fee so I can give it to the charity.’’

Charity fundraiser, Dee Littler, said: "It was a true pleasure to meet Terry during his time in ICU and hear about his journey on the ward. I had the opportunity to explain how MWL NHS Charity supports patients across our hospitals, and I was delighted to feature his photograph in our charity marketing materials, especially to highlight the incredible work of the Critical Care team.

“It was wonderful to see Terry looking so well, and even more rewarding to take him back to the ward to reunite with the staff who had cared for him, as well as to accept his kind donation in support of the charity."
