Trust is the best in the North West in patient care assessments

Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) has been named as the best in the North West and one of the top performing Trusts in England in the latest national assessments.

The Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) programme saw MWL officially ranked as the top performing NHS Trust in the North West and the fourth highest ranking in the country after inspections were carried out at Whiston, St Helens, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and the intermediate care unit at Newton Hospital.

PLACE inspections see each individual facility scored for areas that really matter to patients including cleanliness, food, privacy and dignity, condition and appearance and the quality of the environment for patients with dementia and disabilities.

The Trust scored particularly highly in terms of cleanliness with Whiston, St Helens and Ormskirk hospitals scoring 100% with Newton and Southport scoring more than 99% in both categories.

Whiston, St Helens and Newton hospitals also scored 100% in the condition, appearance and maintenance category with Southport and Ormskirk again scoring more than 99%.

The PLACE assessments are carried out by patients, patient representatives and members of the public who inspect and score all acute and specialist organisations throughout England.

Rob Cooper, Chief Executive of MWL said: “We are incredibly proud to see these results which show that the Trust provides one of the best environments and facilities for our patients in the country.

“The results highlight our commitment to providing high quality 5 Star Care for our patients and I am immensely proud of all our teams who work so hard to maintain the highest standards possible across the Trust.’’

Michelle Nolan, Estates and Facilities Matron, has expressed how pleased the Trust is to have received this excellent inspection result.
