Whiston Hospital porters celebrated at national awards

A Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust porter, who has worked in the NHS for almost 45 years, has won a leading national award for his “dedication and commitment’’.

Alan Sutton, who is based at Whiston Hospital, won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in the national MyPorter Awards.

He received a host of testimonials from staff across MWL as well as a number of thank you letters from members of the public.

One such letter highlighted the story of how Alan went above and beyond to find a much-loved toy belonging to a dementia patient who was left in distress after its loss. Alan searched meticulously for the toy which he found and returned to a thankful patient and family.

As part of his nomination one senior member of staff said: “Alan is a valuable asset to the Trust and epitomises the organisation’s values in his dedication and commitment to the role in supporting our patients, visitors, and staff.

“He is an exceptional supervisor whose commitment shines through every day in his approach to the service delivery and supporting his team. Alan’s motivation ensures he delivers the best service for the patients, visitors, and staff—nothing is too much trouble.”

Alan was joined at the awards by Brian Kennedy, Senior Portering, Transport and Logistics Manager who was shortlisted in the Leader of the Year category.

Brian’s nomination stated: “At the heart of his approach is the desire for every team member to be the very best they can be to support the efficient running of the Trust’s hospitals and deliver friendly, compassionate and considerate patient interactions. His dedication to this is infectious, inspiring his team to bring their best selves to work.’’

The MyPorter Awards recognise the vital contribution made to patient care by portering and cleaning professionals across the NHS.
