Hospital charity donation sees St Helens breast cancer patients benefit from new state-of-the-art equipment

Breast cancer patients at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are benefiting from a new piece of cutting-edge equipment that will support their care.

Staff at the Burney Breast Unit at St Helens Hospital are now using a state-of-the-art Faxitron machine thanks to funds generously donated to the Trust’s MWL NHS Charity.

The machine provides the hospital’s breast cancer surgical team with immediate access to high-resolution imaging and biopsy reporting during an operation which provides the best possible support and care for patients.

Miss Leena Chagla, Lead Clinician, said: “The Faxitron machine enables us to take an X-ray and assess the specimen of the cancer we remove surgically during the operation itself instead of sending the information to another department for testing.

“Having this machine with us saves time, both in theatre and in clinic, meaning we can see more patients as well as improving outcomes.

“A big thank you to all those who made it possible, especially the Trust’s Charity Team and Miss Sonia Bathla, Consultant Surgeon, who provided great support to the appeal. This will make a huge difference and benefit many patients in the local community”.

MWL NHS Charity was able to support the purchase of this equipment through the team’s fundraising activity, generous donations and a legacy gift left by a former patient.

Victoria Burrows, Head of MWL NHS Charity, said “We are so pleased to see the Faxitron equipment already making such a difference to patients receiving fantastic care from the Burney Breast Unit.

“As an NHS Charity we are so grateful to everyone who supports the work of the team, and we’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to purchasing the Faxitron machine which will support patients for many years to come.’’
