Trust named best in the North West for second year running

Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) has once again been recognised as the top-performing Trust in the North West, and ranked second overall in England, following the latest national Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) results.

The inspections covered Whiston, St Helens, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, along with the intermediate care unit at Newton Hospital. PLACE assessments focus on the things that matter most to patients, including:

  • Quality of food
  • Privacy and dignity
  • Cleanliness
  • Condition and appearance of buildings
  • How well environments support people with dementia or disabilities

Importantly, these inspections are carried out by patients, patient representatives and members of the public, ensuring their voice is central to improving hospital environments.

MWL delivered excellent results across the board, including 100% scores in several areas. Whiston, Newton and Ormskirk hospitals achieved full marks for cleanliness, while St Helens, Newton and Ormskirk also received top scores for condition, appearance and maintenance.

Rob Cooper, Chief Executive of MWL, said: “These results are a real source of pride for us, showing that our Trust offers some of the highest quality environments and facilities. They underline our unwavering commitment to delivering 5 Star Patient Care, and I am deeply grateful to every member of our staff whose dedication ensures we maintain the very highest standards across MWL.”
