Hospital patients to benefit from St Helens schoolchildren’s generosity

Patients at Whiston Hospital are set to benefit from the generosity of children from a St Helens Primary School.

Youngsters from Holy Cross Primary School raised money to buy materials for local crochet group, UnTangled, to knit Octopus toys that are often used to help support anxious patients, or those with dementia, in hospital settings.

Emergency Department Matron at Whiston Hospital, Claire Fraser, accepted the toys and thanked the children for their efforts.

She said: “I just wanted to express my gratitude and thanks to the pupils who worked so hard to raise money for our patients.

“They truly are remarkable, and their generosity will make our patients’ lives a lot more comfortable in the Emergency Department. Sometimes patients get a bit scared, or they are frightened, and the octopus toys will help the nurses to make the patients feel a bit better.

“I can’t thank the pupils enough for the amazing work they have all done. They should be very proud.’’

Donna Davies, from Holy Cross Primary School, said: “The children in years 4, 5 and 6 raise funds through a tuck shop and regular coffee mornings and they then give the money to good causes like this which is lovely.

“We are really proud of them.’’
