Award shortlist for staff Deaf awareness training programme

A training package to help staff across MWL support Deaf patients and visitors has been shortlisted for two national awards.

The Trust has been named as a finalist in two categories of this year’s Patient Experience Network National Awards for its work with the DRC to deliver a training programme for staff to raise Deaf awareness amongst staff.

The bespoke training package lasts for four hours and is available every month to all staff. It is facilitated by a member of the patient experience team in conjunction with the Deafness Resource Centre. Facilitators are either profoundly Deaf themselves using a BSL interpreter or a member of DRC staff that is a native BSL user meaning that delivery is by experts by experience. The course has been well received by everyone who has taken part so far.

Yvonne Mahambrey, Quality Matron for Patient Experience at the Trust, says she is delighted to see the Trust nominated.

She said: “To see the team shortlisted for two categories in the awards is a fantastic recognition for the work that has been undertaken so far.

“The Trust is committed to inclusivity and this course has the Deaf patient and what is important to them at its core. It helps our staff understand the barriers which exist between hearing and deaf people and how positive action will help break down any potential barriers and improve the care Deaf people experience.

“It is a simple idea that often makes us ask "why hasn’t this been done before?”

The Patient Experience Network National Awards recognise best practice in patient experience across all areas of health and social care in the UK and the Trust has been shortlisted in the Environment of Care and Communicating Effectively with Patients and Families categories.

The winners will be announced in September with the awards ceremony taking place in Birmingham in October.
